We get it: the name is unusual.

As we’ve been talking to people about the company, often one of their first questions is some polite variation on, “what’s the deal with the name?”

Here’s the deal.

A year or two ago, we were at some friends’ farm in Tallahassee, and our young daughter was playing with their kids as the adults chatted inside. As we went back outside, we saw that the kids had taken some pieces of wood outside and set up a makeshift stand, and they were clearly selling something. What? we wanted to know. Lemonade? Cookies?

As it turned out, flower pies. In fact, the name of the store was Flower Pie.

We love the name because it’s offbeat, and because it gets at some of the things we highly value: children, language, and creative play. Flower pies don’t exist in adult life.

But they exist for kids. In fact, kids sell them.

Good enough for us.
